  19th Hole Theme

Planning

Golfing - is it a sport, a hobby, a way of life???  Some people golf occasionally, some weekly, and some live right on the golf course.  This is serious stuff, this golfing thing.  Or is it?  Hit a small white ball through beautiful park-like settings, chat with friends, and drink beer.  Huh - we all should golf!  If you are hosting a party for a Guest of Honor and guests that are golfers, a 19th Hole Theme can be a lot of fun.  It's easy, it's silly, and it's bound to bring a smile to your guests' faces.

Here are some ideas and inspirations:

  1. Green and white with a splash of yellow.  Coloring is key for this Theme.  Look at your golf supplies, and consider the golf course.  Color alone can set the backdrop here.  Grass green as the foundation (linens, chair backs, etc.) then white and a little yellow as highlights.
    • Have fun with material for this Theme.  Plaids, tweeds, felts - you can have a ball with linens and accents taking cues from what people WEAR golfing!
  2. Golf balls - round, white, and dimpled.  Ice cubes shaped as golf balls, golf balls as place cards (hot glue a tea to the back as a prop and use a sharpie on the ball to write your guest's name), you can even inject them into your floral arrangements.
    • Consider making a centerpiece out of golf balls.  You can shape them with hot glue into pyramids with the top supporting a tea light, or you can weave them in with green felt and the occasional triangular flag with the hole number…  You can get really creative with your centerpiece.
  3. The putting green - this can be an activity or a table theme, or even an interactive centerpiece!
  4. Golf clubs - golf clubs are great as infrastructure.  Do you need something to add height to elements of your buffet?  Create pedestals out of mini clubs or even old damaged clubs that are cut to length.  What about a centerpiece that has a LOT of height but can be seen through?  Framing out a doorway?
  5. The Sand Trap - if you are including kids at your party, why not keep them entertained in the Sand Trap (aka sandbox)?  It's a fun activity for children that suits your theme.
    • Lynn in Smyrna suggested having different tables be themed for their refreshment.  She put non-alcoholic drinks at the Water Trap, appetizers at the Sand Trap, the bar at the 19th Hole and the buffet at the Fairway.  Each table was decorated accordingly.  What a great idea!
  6. The Fairway - a long stretch of green can be used in décor, or the entry to your party.
  7. Golf Tees - small sharp pieces of wood - but amazingly useful!  These can be used to hold place cards, as swizzle stick accents, as labels for refreshment items, etc.  Such a small element can provide function as well as enhance your golf Theme.
  8. Flags - small triangular flags are a fun element that add whimsy as well as contribute to your theme.  They would be great as chair accents, for height in centerpieces, or to identify stations at the party.
  9. Golf carts - If you are transporting guests from a parking area to your party space, or you are hosting a progressive, consider renting golf carts!  This is a fun, unexpected element that will build party mojo!
  10. The 19th Hole - this is a party that must have drinking.  High end beers and maybe a signature drink or two.
